Wellington AFC ended a frustrating run of defeats with a thrilling victory away to Torpoint Athletic on Saturday.

The match began in dramatic fashion as the home side took a controversial early lead, with a penalty awarded after skipper Luke Cloke went to ground, which Harry Jeffery converted.

Wellington responded with Jake Quick having a goal-bound effort blocked in the seventh minute, and his brother Jason's cross narrowly missing the goal on the half-hour mark.

Cloke almost doubled Torpoint's lead on 38 minutes, but his shot hit the post.

Wellington suffered a setback just before the break when Kieran Bailey limped off after a tough tackle, with Mark Cornish coming on as a substitute.

They also lost Josh Lukins to injury seven minutes into the second half, with Sam Gleeson replacing him.

Miles Quick's shot hit the post, and substitute Matt Crawley missed a chance in front of goal.

However, Wellington equalised with 20 minutes remaining when Gleeson's cross sailed over the head of keeper Tyler Coombes and into the net.

Torpoint quickly regained the lead, with Jeffery scoring his second of the game at the far post.

Manager Richard Cherry then brought on Phil Mendonca, a move that proved pivotal.

Mendonca was initially denied by Coombes after a mazy run but put Wellington level in the 85th minute after Harry Scott nodded him into space in the box.

The visitors pressed for the winner, which came in the fifth minute of stoppage time, thanks to a stunning individual effort by Mendonca.

He spun away from a Torpoint defender, made an electrifying run down the left, and shot low past Coombes, sparking wild celebrations.

After 13 successive away games, Wellington can now look forward to their first home game of the season on Wednesday, when in-form Barnstaple Town visit the Playing Field.
