“It has been a fantastic summer, and its not over yet”  says Jamie Cox.

Jamie Cox took over as chief executive of Somerset CCC earlier this year, since then he has seen the club enjoy success in all three of the domestic competitions as well as winning the Second XI T20 Cup.

Ahead of the coming weekend’s Metro Bank One Day Cup Final against Glamorgan at Trent Bridge the chief exec who captained Somerset to victory in the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy and runners up in the county championship in 2001 reflected on his time back in the west country so far and what lies ahead.

“Saturday was clearly not what we were after but regardless of that we have two amazing weeks ahead of us. Whatever the outcome it will have been a pretty incredible season and considered to be successful, but of course everyone has worked so hard that you want to have something concrete to show for it and clearly that is what the focus is.

“We have got the 50 over squad who have done an incredible job to get through to the final and even though it looks like an inexperienced team on paper, I think it looks a terrific team.

“The cricket that I have watched in the 50 over competition all summer has been of a very high standard so I can only judge it by what I have seen this year. We have played great cricket against very worthy opponents. Now we have got one more opportunity to come together and put that on display.

“I’m really excited about Sunday, and probably more so than I was even for the T20 last Saturday. It’s a format of the game that I think I always fancied and I’m really excited for the mainly young blokes who are going out to try and win us a trophy. Its a fantastic opportunity for the team.

“One of our historical great strengths is to produce our own players and we are very confident that we can continue to do a fantastic job for the national side and keep on producing good young talent.

“We probably need to push a few more up to higher honours but there are a few coming up through that are almost ready to go. If we keep having team success then it will pay dividends as far as having individuals selected to play for England- that's how the system works.”

Jamie went on: “ It has been a really delightful summer, full of really nice surprises and it feels like a terrific choice we made to return to Somerset. I ruminated for quite a while as to whether it was the right choice for me to comeback. It was always a lure, but for the summer to have played out well, for me to understand that the place is what I remembered it to be - the people and the members are as great cricket people as I remember them to be, is very satisfying.

“However there is a lot ahead of us. We have got to welcome in the women and make that work which is exciting and we have got to make this place as popular a place to come to as it always has been and really deliver a service that our members are proud of.

“The challenges wont stop but its certainly been a fun summer and I, as much as anybody, just hope there is something to show for it.”

The chief exec added: “Regardless I won’t let anyone talk me down from it being a successful season irrespective of where things go from here. It has been a fantastic summer and it's not over yet!”
