Wellington AFC had new signing Charlie Wilson to thank as they cruised into the second round of the Premier Cup.

They hosted Middlezoy Rovers at the Playing Field on Wednesday, October 9.

Wilson, who recently played for Axminster Town, made an immediate impact by scoring four goals on his debut.

Manager Richard Cherry made three changes to the squad that secured a 2-0 victory against Paulton Rovers.

Young goalkeeper Charlie Hawkins replaced the unwell Jake Viney, Wilson came in for Nathan Byrne, and Jake Mawford took the place of dual-registered Phil Mendonca, who joined Willand Rovers.

The Tangerines had a flying start, netting two goals within the first 12 minutes.

They took the lead when Middlezoy keeper Ashley Hutchings parried the ball out, allowing Rohan Poulsom to find the net.

Four minutes later, Wilson scored a stunning lob from 40 yards, catching Hutchings off his line.

Middlezoy, from the South West Peninsula League, fought back and gave the hosts a few scares, but failed to score before the break.

Wellington, however, dominated the second half, scoring five more times without reply.

Substitute Josh Baker scored a superb header to make it 3-0 after 53 minutes.

10 minutes later, Wilson scored again after great work from another substitute, Sam Bryant.

Wilson then completed his hat-trick with a rabona cross that dropped in at the far post.

Wellington wrapped up the match with two late strikes.

Wilson scored a close-range finish to make it six, and Mark Cornish headed home in stoppage time to complete the scoring.

Rob Hall, who had been out injured for two years, made a late appearance, taking over as goalkeeper from Hawkins.

The result boosts the Tangerines’ confidence as they prepare for their league match against Shepton Mallet.
