Taunton Town boss Richard Luffman expressed his ‘disappointment’ after his ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ team lost to Wimborne on Saturday (November 9).
The Peacocks lost 3-0 to the Dorset side on the back of ending Walton & Hersham’s eight-month unbeaten run at home.
Speaking to the club’s media after the game, he said: “First off, you’ve got to say congratulations to the opposition, they were by far the better team. They thoroughly deserved their three points today.
“They out worked us, better all over the pitch. For us, the less said the better really, just not acceptable, not good enough, no fight, no hunger.
“I’ve picked the team, I sign the players – every single one of them is mine – so I’ll wear the responsibility of it, but I feel extremely disappointed for what we put on as a display.”
The match was stopped temporarily in the first half after Taunton Town player Josh Owers received a nasty injury. Team mates Ollie Woodhouse also had to be substituted through injury.
Luffman said: “He is brave as anything and was brilliant for the 10 minutes he was on.”
He also picked out Ollie Woodhouse for praise for the start Taunton made to the game.
“Those two coming off after 10 minutes certainly damaged us,” said Luffman. “But I’m not making excuses, we’ve got a team that’s good enough to compete and that was torrid for 80 minutes.”
Taunton Town have had an up and down season so far with spells of decent results punctuated with a poor result here and there.
The Peacocks came into this season with a pretty much brand new squad after their relegation from the National League and started off with a 3-3 draw at home to Gloucester City, and a couple of defeats on the road at Poole and Hungerford.
Taunton then went on an 11-match unbeaten run, which included making progress in the FA Cup and the FA Trophy.
After being knocked out of the FA Cup by National League side Maidenhead United, they got an important win at Basingstoke Town but then lost two games 5-1 back to back. Things seemed to be improving when they secured at point at home to Bracknell Town and beat Walton & Hersham away.
Luffman said it seems to be two steps forward, and one step back for his side at the moment, adding: “The three goals we’ve given away (against Wimborne) are so soft, we got beat up in midfield, we haven’t had a shot in the forward areas. I’m absolutely fuming and upset…we can’t keep having these performances and moments in games.
“We’re Jekyll and Hyde, we go from being one of the best teams in the league and then we deliver these sort of performances.”
