Wellington AFC made it eight wins in a row and moved into the top six after a hard-earned victory over Ilfracombe.

The Tangerines triumphed 3-1 in the Jewson Western League premier division match at the Playing Field on Wednesday, November 13.

With manager Richard Cherry returning to guide the team after missing Saturday’s game, Wellington made two changes to their starting line-up.

These changes involved bringing in Sam Pashen and Miles Quick for the absent Sam Towler and Phil Mendonca.

A quick start saw Wellington take the lead after just five minutes, with a slick back-heeled goal by Jake Quick following a cross from Nathan Byrne.

Despite Ilfracombe’s spirited response and a player being sin-binned, Wellington maintained their advantage through to half-time.

Ilfracombe managed to pull one back through Aidan Barrow, marking the first goal conceded by the Tangerines in over 400 minutes of play.

However, their hopes dwindled when they were reduced to 10 players and later nine players following a sin-binning and red card.

The game was sealed for Wellington with substitute Matt Crawley’s curler in stoppage time, leaving Ilfracombe’s keeper Dom Aplin with no chance.

The win sees Wellington continue their impressive form, now setting their sights on a local derby against Bridgwater United at home on Saturday.

The team for Wednesday’s match was: Jake Viney, Mark Cornish, Tom Stone, Jason Quick, Sam Gleeson, Kieran Ireland, Sam Pashen, Josh Lukins, Nathan Byrne, Miles Quick, and Jake Quick.

Substitutes used were Matt Crawley, William Pinnick, and Charlie Wilson, while Ryan Hibbert and Matt Hesford were unused.

The match highlighted Wellington's strong form as they continue their push up the league table.
