SOMERSET captain Ian Blackwell will make a surprise return to action in just over a week.
It was initially feared the England all-rounder, who has been badly missed by his county, would miss the rest of the season after injuring his shoulder at the end of May.
But, after undergoing surgery four weeks ago, he looks set to play in a club match as a batsman next weekend and hopes to make his Somerset return before the end of the season.
After travelling to London earlier this week to see the specialist who carried out the surgery, he said: "Everything has gone very well and they are pleased with the way I am progressing.
"The specialist has given me the all clear to play just as a batsman on July 22 which is great news. I have spoken to the ECB doctors and, as long they give me clearance, I will be going back home to Derbyshire to play for my local side next weekend."
