Taunton Town have appointed Martyn Rogers as assistant to manager Leigh Robinson.

The former Tiverton Town boss replaces Jaimie Carwardine who is unable to fully commit to the club for the time being. Following a playing career with Bristol City and Exeter City, Rogers took up the manager's reins at Tiverton Town in 1992 and led them to four Western League titles, two FA Vase wins and various cup final successes including five in the Les Phillips (Western League) Cup.

He left the Devon club in 2010 after being in charge for over 1,000 games which included some major battles with the Peacocks under Russell Musker.

Rogers had a brief spell as manager of Weymouth in 2011 but has since taken a break from football.

However he is keen to get started at Wordsworth Drive.

He said: “I’m delighted to team up with Leigh and hopefully we can make Taunton Town successful and give the town of Taunton a football club to be proud of.”

Robinson said: “I'm extremely pleased that Martyn has agreed to join the club.

“He brings a wealth of experience at this level and above, as well as a fantastic presence and good contacts.

“Everyone at the club is looking forward to having him involved.

“He has recently had a short break from the game so he comes to us refreshed, hungry and with great enthusiasm.”

Carwardine was unable to commit himself to the role because of unforeseen personal circumstances but will rejoin the management team at the club later in the season.

Club chairman Kevin Sturmey said: “I am delighted that Leigh has secured Martyn as his assistant.

“Martyn needs no introduction as his reputation is legendary in non-league circles and I am sure Leigh and Martyn will be a formidable partnership to build on the foundations in place.

“It is disappointing that Jaimie has had to step down but I hope we will see him back soon when circumstances allow.”
