IT’S as you were at the top of Division 1 of the West Somerset League, with none of the top seven winning on Saturday, predominantly due to the Bank Holiday, which saw Brompton Ralph’s game at Bridgetown, Crowcombe’s game at home to Dulverton completely washed out, and Wiveliscombe ’s game at home to Morebath abandoned at tea.

At this stage, Morebath were 71-6 against the league leaders, and the abandonment sees Morebath relegated. With Wiveliscombe unable to complete, Timberscombe had the chance to go top with a win against struggling Roadwater, but Roadwater sprung a massive surprise by defeating their Exmoor rivals by 83 runs, with Dave Hill (58) and Freddie Wilson (51) leading the way for Roadwater. This result leaves Roadwater favourites to stay up in the place of Bridgetown, who now need to win their final game at Dulverton on Saturday and hope Roadwater slip up in their last three games. At the top of the table, all eyes will be at Cowbridge on Saturday, where Timberscombe host Wiveliscombe in what is now all but a title decider.

In the division’s other game, West Monkton defeated a depleted Holford by seven wickets.

The top three in Division 2 were all victims of the weather , severely denting Carhampton’s hopes of promotion and seemingly leaving Winsford and Blagdon Hill to fight it out for the top spot.

The two crucial games containing the bottom four both beat the weather, however, with Stogumber’s seven-wicket victory at Hinkley Point condemning the Bridgwater side to relegation and boosting the Quantocks’ side’s survival chances thanks to Dan Godfrey’s 66. In the other basement battle, Lydeard St Lawrence beat Bagborough by 12 runs and now just need one more win from their last three games to confirm their Division 2 status for next season.

In Division 3, defeats for title-chasing Churchinford and Casuals – at Cannington and Minehead , respectively – have opened up the title race with four sides now in serious contention with the top two spots. However, with Churchinford only having one game left, the destination of the trophies is very much in Cutcombe’s hands as they face Minehead and then Casuals twice in their last three games. Taunton ’s promotion hopes were dashed by bottom side Bishop’s Hull, who chased down Taunton’s 70-8 with just four balls to spare. However, with only one game remaining, Crowcombe 2nds know they only need maximum bonus points in their game against Ashbrittle on Saturday to condemn Bishop’s Hull and Ashbrittle to life in Division 4 next season.

In Division 4, Brompton Ralph 2nds’ 46-run victory against Roadwater 2nds on Saturday, coupled with Roadwater’s washout at home to West Monkton 2nds on Bank Holiday Monday, has assured confirmed the Pitsford Hill side’s promotion to Division 3.

Sampford Arundel can still pip them to the title, however, and now only need eight points from their last two games to secure their own second successive promotion. At the other end of the table, North Newton’s defeat at Fitzhead means they must win their last two games to stand any chance of survival, although any two of the bottom six could yet be relegated.

In Division 5, Wiveliscombe 2nds’ 10-wicket defeat of winless Brompton Ralph 3rds propels them into second place in the table, although with both North Curry and Kilve having a game in hand on them, Wiveliscombe need to beat Stoke St Mary 2nds in their last game of the season and hope that other results go their way to assure promotion. Kilve closed the gap on leaders North Curry with a six-run win, although the White Street side still only need 15 points from their last two games to guarantee promotion to Division 4 at the first time of asking.
