PLANS have been announced for a special night of football to remember Wellington AFC stalwart Selwyn Aspin, who died last month aged 80.

The centrepiece of the event at the town’s Playing Field on Friday, November 9, will be a match between Wellington Legends and Sampford Blues Legends – featuring a host of former players from the two clubs .

Proceedings start at 6pm with a sponsored penalty shootout competition for teams from the club’s thriving youth section and also Wellington Ladies.

After the shootout – at approximately 7.15pm – a permanent tribute to Mr Aspin will be unveiled with the “Legends” game due to kick-off at 7.30pm.

At half-time, the veterans will be given an extended break as Wellington Ladies take the field for a 20-minute match.

Following the “Legends” game, there will be presentations in the clubhouse and entertainment from singer Ryan Hawkings.

Local companies are being asked for donations towards a raffle on the night, there will be refreshments available and the bars will be open.

A percentage of the proceeds will go Macmillan Cancer Support, which has been chosen by Aspin family.

A club spokesman said: “Selwyn was a pivotal figure in Wellington AFC for many years and we hope the night will be a fitting tribute to his magnificent contribution to the club’s history.”

A proud Yorkshireman, Selwyn was a well-known figure – both in the Wellington area and in West Country footballing circles.

He became involved in the club after moving down to the town from his native Halifax in the mid-1960s.

Since then he had been a youth team manager, first-team manager and was club chairman from 1992-2002.

Mr Aspin’s family have also been heavily involved in Wellington AFC over the years.

His two sons, Graham and Stuart, and oldest grandson, Craig, all played first-team football for the club while Graham is a former vice-chairman and serves on the management committee.

Admission to the special night is £3 for adults (including a free raffle ticket) and children are free.

Anyone wishing to donate a prize to the raffle should contact the event organisers Joe Conway (07946-395649) or Jason Hawkings (07747-868154).
